@GTWBB Draws Indiana for Big Ten/ACC Challenge

May 27, 2015

THE FLATS — The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will head to Indiana University for the 2015 Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 2, the two conference offices announced Wednesday.

The Yellow Jackets are 6-2 all-time in the challenge, including a 4-0 record at home. The Jackets have recorded wins against Illinois, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa and lost at Purdue in 2012 and at Michigan State in 2014.

This will be the first meeting in school history between the Yellow Jackets and the Hoosiers. Indiana is 5-3 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and has won four of the last five games in the challenge, including a 76-67 victory at Boston College last year.

A year ago, the ACC and the Big Ten tied, each winning seven games, to mark only the second tie in Challenge history. The ACC owns a 55-39 edge over the Big Ten in Challenge games and six Challenge titles.

Head coach MaChelle Joseph, a native of Auburn, Ind., returns to her home state for the matchup. Joseph, who graduated from Purdue as the all-time leading scorer in school (men or women) and Big Ten Conference history (2,405 points), played high school basketball at Dekalb High School which is approximately 200 miles away from Indiana’s campus. This past April, Joseph was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Joseph was a decorated high school women’s basketball player, earning Parade Magazine and Street & Smith All-American honors in 1988 and was honored on the 1988 Indiana All-Star team after her high school career.  A four-year starter for the Boilermakers from 1989-1992, Joseph is one of the most decorated players in Purdue and Big Ten Conference history as she garnered numerous conference and national accolades including Big Ten Freshman of the Year, second-team all-conference, first-team all-Big Ten accolades in 1990, 1991 and 1992 and she was named Big Ten Player of the Year as a senior. She also earned Kodak All-America honors in 1992, when she was tabbed the Women’s Basketball News’ College Player of the Year.

There will be a familiar face on the opposing bench, former Yellow Jacket associate head coach and current head coach of Indiana, Teri Moren. Moren coached alongside Joseph for three years, aiding the Yellow Jackets to three NCAA Tournament appearances and three consecutive 20-win seasons from 2007-10 before heading to Indiana State to become the head coach in 2010. Moren was then tabbed as Indiana’s head coach on August 9, 2014. Moren, like Joseph, was a four-year letter winner at Purdue and is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
