Georgia Tech To Travel To Michigan State For Women's ACC/Big Ten Challenge

June 4, 2014

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will travel to Michigan State for the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Thursday, December 4, at the Breslin Center, the two conferences announced Wednesday.

“We are excited about the opportunity to play a team with the tradition that Michigan State has,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “This is our second time facing them in the ACC/ Big Ten challenge and it is a great opportunity for our young team.”

The Yellow Jackets have a 6-1 record during the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge, including a 4-0 record at home. Tech’s only loss in the challenge came at #14/13 Purdue in 2012-13. The Jackets have recorded wins against Illinois, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa.

The Jackets topped the Spartans, 70-57, in their last ACC/Big Ten Challenge meeting in Atlanta on December 3, 2008. It was the only meeting between the two teams. Overall, the Yellow Jackets are 12-5 against the Big Ten in the history of the program.

The Spartans are 4-3 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge after falling at Florida State, 60-58, in 2013. Michigan State earned a share of the 2014 Big Ten regular season title and advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament before falling to North Carolina, 62-53.

The ACC has won six of the seven Challenges, including a 7-5 victory last season and a 7-5 victory in 2012. In 2011, the two conferences tied, 6-6.

Georgia Tech returns six letterwinners from last year’s team, led by rising sophomore Kaela Davis. Davis was a second team All-ACC selection as a freshman and was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team. Davis led all ACC rookies in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game, and was named the ACC Rookie of the Week a league-high four times. During the 2013-14 season, the Yellow Jackets completed its seventh 20 win season in the past eight years under head coach MaChelle Joseph. The Jackets also received its seventh at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament under Coach Joseph. Tech finished the season at 20-12 and seventh in the ACC with a 9-7 conference record.
