Three Jackets to Compete in European Championships

THE FLATS –Three members of the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will represent their home countries in the U20 European Championship, which begins on July 3 in both Udine, Italy and Sofia, Bulgaria.

Two Yellow Jackets will compete in the Division A U20 European Championship in Udine, Italy. Sophomore Katarina Vuckovic (Smederevo, Serbia) will represent team Serbia. Serbia will play in Group C against the Slovak Republic, Sweden and Ukraine. The first game for Vuckovic and team Serbia will be against the Slovak Republic on July 3rd.

Vuckovic is no stranger to playing in the European Championships for Serbia. The Smederevo, Serbia native won a bronze medal with the Serbian U18 Team at the 2012 European Championship. In 2013, Vuckovic helped the U19 Serbian team to an eighth place finish while averaging 9.8 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game during the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship.

Also playing in the Division A U20 European Championship is incoming freshman Antonia Peresson, a native of Pordenone, Italy. Peresson and team Italy will play in Group D along with the Netherlands, Poland and Belarus. Team Italy kicks off play against the Netherlands on July 3rd.

During the 2013 U18 European Championship, Peresson averaged 7.4 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game for Italy. She also averaged 1.3 steals per game and shot 37.5 percent from the field. She was also a member of Team Italy during the FIBA U17 World Championship in 2012. She averaged 6.2 points per game, 2.4 rebounds per game and 1.4 assists per game during the championships. During the championships, Peresson competed against current Georgia Tech sophomore Kaela Davis and the USA Team.

Incoming freshman Simina Avram will play for Romania in the Division B U20 European Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. Avram and team Romania play Portugal on July 3rd of the Division B championship.

Avram, a native of Brasov, Romania, played for Romania in the U18 European Championship. In six games, Avram averaged 1.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. She played a tournament-high 21 minutes against Poland and scored a tournament-high four points against Greece. During the 2013 U20 European Championship, Avram averaged 4.2 points per game while grabbing an average of 2.8 rebounds per game. Against Israel, Avram shot 55 perfect from the field, scoring 10 points. She grabbed a tournament-high six rebounds against Bulgaria.
