THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball sophomore guard Francesca Pan is set to return to the FIBA U20 Women’s European Championship this weekend with the U20 Italian National Team. The European Championship runs from July 8-16 in Matosinhos, Portugal.

The championship consists of 16 national teams. From July 8-10, the teams will open competition with group play before the round of 16 kicks off on Wednesday, July 12. Italy will meet Portugal, Latvia and Lithuania in group play Saturday through Monday, respectively. Following a rest day on Tuesday, the teams get back in competition on Wednesday.

“We are so proud of Francesca and how she continues to represent Georgia Tech and our women’s basketball program at the highest level,” commented Georgia Tech head coach MaChelle Joseph.

Pan, who has no shortage of national team experience, helped lead Italy to the championship game last summer before falling to Spain in the U20 Women’s European Championship. The Italian native has also taken part in the 2015 U18 European Championship, 2013 U16 European Championship and 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship. Last summer in Portugal, Pan averaged 10.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for Italy.

Pan capped a storied freshman campaign on The Flats, becoming just the second player in program history to earn ACC Freshman of the Year. She earned ACC Rookie of the Week five times and finished the season averaging 11.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. As a freshman, Pan was also named to the ACC All-Freshman Team and All-ACC Academic Team.
