THE FLATS - Georgia Tech women's basketball junior guard Tyaunna Marshallwas named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 Friday.
The John R. Wooden Award is presented annually to the outstanding collegiate basketball player of the year and list is chosen by a preseason poll of national college women’s basketball media members. These returning players are considered the front-runners for the prestigious award by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board.
It is the third preseason honor for Marshall after earning preseason All-ACC by both the league's media and the conference's head coaches at ACC media day in October. She is one of just six ACC players on the preseason watch list.
Marshall has started 64 of 70 career games in her first two years at Georgia Tech and led the Yellow Jackets to the best season in school history last year. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native helped Tech register 26 victories, 12 ACC wins, advance to the second ACC championship game in program history and earn a trip to the Jackets' first Sweet 16.
"Ty Marshall is one of the top five players in the ACC, the best conference in the country," head coach MaChelle Josephsaid. "I am very excited for Ty that she is finally being given the credit she deserves for the success she has had at Georgia Tech. As a freshman and sophomore, Ty was one of our leading scorers, playing next to back-to-back first-round WNBA draft picks. She has been a catalyst in our rise as a program."
Marshall has scored in double digits in 54 career games and has scored 20 or more points in 14 contests. She enters the 2012-13 season with 978 career points and will become the 26th Yellow Jacket with 1,000 career points. Marshall earned third team All-ACC and ACC All-Freshman honors in 2011 and second team All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament Team selections in 2012.
