THE FLATS -- The Georgia Tech women's basketball team officially opens the 2017-18 season Friday night at Appalachian State.

1. Georgia Tech officially opens the 2017-18 season on the road at Appalachian State on Friday. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in the Holmes Convocation Center and will be available on ESPN3.
2. The Yellow Jackets and Mountaineers have met eight times in program history with Tech leading the series, 7-1. Tech took the meeting last season in Atlanta, 81-52.
3. Georgia Tech returns nine letterwinners from last season's squad that went 22-15 overall and reached the title game of the WNIT. The Yellow Jackets took Michigan to triple overtime in the championship, but fell in the final period.
4. Amongst Tech's nine returning letterwinners is the reigning ACC Freshman of the Year, Francesca Pan. The Italian native made Georgia Tech history becoming just the second play­er in program history to earn the prestigious honor. Pan finished as Tech's second leading scorer last season, averaging 11.5 ppg.
5. Head coach MaChelle Joseph is in her 15th season on The Flats and carries an all-time career record of 274-177. Joseph is the all-time winningest coach in program history and holds the highest winning percentage in Yellow Jacket history at 60.9 percent.

Tech and App met last year for the first time in a decade as the Jackets upended the Mountaineers in McCamish Pavilion, 81-52. Elo Edeferioka posted a double-double behind 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Cha'Ron Sweeney led all scorers with 17 points. Antonia Peresson added 15 points to the board as four Jackets scored in double-figures. Tech won the rebounding battle, 46-41, and shot 40.6 percent (28-69) from the floor to App's 30.2 percent (19-63). Additionally, the Jackets set a program record, hitting 14 three-pointers in the contest paced by Peresson and Sweeney's five each.
