Georgia Tech Heads To Puerto Rico For Thanksgiving

Nov. 22, 2012

Georgia Tech San Juan Shootout Game Notes

The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (2-1) will take a working vacation over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday break as it travels to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for a pair of games in the San Juan Shootout. On Friday, Nov. 23, the Yellow Jackets will take on the Syracuse Orange at 12 p.m. ET. Tech will finish its trip with a match-up against the UW-Milwaukee Panthers at 12 p.m. ET Saturday. This will be the first game against both Syracuse and UW-Milwaukee for Georgia Tech.

The Jackets finished their three-game homestand with a 76-72 win over Marquette Nov. 18. Junior Dawnn Maye led Georgia Tech with a career high-tying 23 points and freshman Brittany Jackson posted the best game of her young career with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. The Yellow Jackets tallied 27 steals against the Golden Eagles, tying the program record for steals in a game.

This will be the second trip to San Juan in as many years for the Yellow Jackets. Last year, Tech played No. 13/13 Rutgers and RV/18 Green Bay in San Juan.

1,000 Career Points
Junior Tyaunna Marshall scored her 1,000th career point on a putback against Kennesaw State, Nov. 13, at McCamish Pavilion. She became the 26th Yellow Jacket with 1,000 career points and just the 10th to do so before her senior year at Georgia Tech.
Marshall currently has 1,027 points and has scored in double digits in 57 of 73 career games.

Naismith Award
Junior Tyaunna Marshall was named to the preseason watch list for the Naismith Award for the women’s college player of the year the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Nov. 15.

Wooden Watch
Junior Tyaunna Marshall was named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 30. The award is presented annually to the outstanding collegiate basketball player of the year.
Marshall earned third team All-ACC as a freshman in 2011 and second team All-ACC as a sophomore last season. After leading Tech to only its second ACC championship game appearance in 2012 with three 20-plus point games, Marshall was selected to the ACC All-Tournament First Team. She earned 2012 Preseason All-ACC honors at the league’s media day in October.

Rookie Award
Freshman Brittany Jackson was named ACC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 19 for her performances against Kennesaw State and Marquette.
For the week, Jackson averaged 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds, shot 45 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from 3-point range. Against Marquette, she scored 21 points and made five 3-pointers.

Steals Record
The Yellow Jackets tied the program record for steals by the team in a single-game with 27 against Marquette. Tech also finished with 27 steals against Mississippi Valley State (Nov. 22, 2008) and against Georgia State (Dec. 14, 1993).

Double-Double
Dawnn Maye recorded her second career double-double against Marquette Nov. 18 but neither has been the traditional points/rebounds double-double.
Against the Golden Eagles, Maye finished with a career-high-tying 23 points and 10 steals. She was the first Jacket with a points/steals double-double since Jacqua Williams did so with 14 points and 11 steals at North Carolina on Jan. 5, 2008. Maye was the first Yellow Jacket with double-digit steals since Jill Ingram had 14 against Virginia Tech on Feb. 29, 2008.
Her first career double-double came on Nov. 13, 2001, when she had 14 points and 10 assists against Old Dominion.
