Bivins, Davis and Whiteside Named Captains

Nov. 22, 2013

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball head coach MaChelle Joseph announced that redshirt senior Shayla Bivins, freshman Kaela Davis and sophomore Aaliyah Whiteside have been named the captains of the 2013-14 Yellow Jackets.

Shayla Bivins has developed into an outstanding leader both on and off the court,” Joseph said. “She is the president of the student-athlete advisory board and does so much for all of the Tech student-athletes. Aaliyah and Kaela have established themselves as consistent people and students. I look forward to their development in this program.”

Bivins has started the first three games for the Jackets at center, averaging 13.7 minutes per game. The 6’5″ senior has grabbed seven rebounds so far this season and is averaging 2.0 ppg. Bivins was selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee in September. Bivins was the FBS student-athlete representative and was just one of two student-athletes that serve on the committee.

Davis continued the remarkable start to her freshman season against the Lady Vols by scoring 28 points. Davis leads the Yellow Jackets and all ACC rookies with 22.7 ppg. She ranks second in the conference in scoring and is tied for 12th in rebounding (8.7 rpg). She is also tied for the lead in the ACC for 3-pointers made with a team-high 13.

Whiteside is averaging 13.0 ppg in her sophomore season for the Jackets, which is the second highest on the team. The Memphis, Tennessee native is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game and has made six 3-pointers so far this season. In all three of Tech’s games so far, Whiteside has scored in double-figures.

The Yellow Jackets travel to #23/21 Georgia this Sunday at 2 p.m.
