Vuckovic Nominated for WBCA Allstate Good Works Team

Dec. 2, 2015

INDIANAPOLIS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball junior Katarina Vuckovic is a nominee for the 2016 WBCA Allstate Good Works Team for demonstrating her commitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in her community.

In its fourth year, the Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams® recognize players at all levels of college basketball who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. From establishing nonprofits that provide youth with the necessary tools to become leaders of tomorrow, to raising awareness around pertinent issues that could save lives, these student-athletes exhibit leadership skills both on and off the court.

The 103 WBCA nominees were submitted by sports information directors and college basketball coaches across the country. From the nominations, special voting panels, headlined by former University of Tennessee basketball athlete, NCAA champion and WNBA legend Tamika Catchings, and former Duke University basketball athlete, two-time NCAA® champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill, will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.

Along with excelling on the court and in the classroom, Vuckovic finds time to stay involved in the community. The Smederevo, Serbia, native has been involved in a number of community service initiatives since her arrival on campus in 2013. Vuckovic has volunteered with Urban Perform, helping to build a basketball court for the local community and participating in a Popsicle party with underserved children. Vukocvic has also volunteered at Safe House, a local soup kitchen, the Ronald McDonald House and the Boys and Girls Club Day for Kids.

Vuckovic has aided her teammates in adopting a family during the holidays every season and has visited patients at the Shepard Center. Vuckovic has also volunteered with Girls on the Run, helping promote healthy habits among local girls. She planted trees on campus during Tech Beautification Day and ran “Shoot for Shoes” during Earth Day at Tech. The junior has cheered on participants in the Alzheimer’s Walk and the Atlanta Breast Cancer walk. During the spring, she visits schools that have participated in the women’s basketball Jacket 2 Jacket reading program to read to the winners of the competition.

Vuckovic, who is a member of SAAB, traveled to the Dominican Republic this past summer with fellow Yellow Jackets for a service trip. During the trip, Vuckovic interacted with the locals, teaching them how to play different sports and helped build a house.

This season, Vuckovic has stepped into a starting role, starting all seven games. She is averaging 11.6 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. Vuckovic’s 1.3 blocks per game are a team-high. She scored a career-high 20 points at Georgia and has scored in double-figures in four of seven games this season.

The Yellow Jackets take on Indiana in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at 7 p.m. tonight in Bloomington, Ind., at Assembly Hall.
