THE FLATS – In the final game of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Georgia Tech softball (2-5) used two home runs and sacrifice fly to power past Indiana (1-8), 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Mewborn Field.
Head coach Aileen Morales says:
“Today was another solid team win. I think we are continuing to get better every game, so this weekend was a step in the right direction. I am proud of the competitiveness and the fight we showed.”
How it happened:
Designated as the away team, Georgia Tech batted first. FreshmanBreanna Roper reached base on four balls. Sophomore Sydney Stavro laid down a sac bunt but a throwing error on the Hoosiers caused Stavro to reach base and Roper advanced to third. Sophomore Rebecca Prairie sent a long ball out to right field, plating Roper with the sacrifice fly to give Tech the 1-0 edge.
Senior pitcher Emily Anderson earned the start in the circle for the Jackets. After loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first, Anderson struck out the final batter to keep the Hoosiers off the board.
With the Jackets bringing their 1-0 lead into the top of the second, the Hoosiers walked freshman Lilly Hooper to get the leadoff hitter on base. With Hooper on first, senior Kelsey Chisholm stepped up and sent a two-run bomb out of center field to push Tech’s lead to 3-0. The home run was Chisholm’s first of the season.
Leading 3-0 in the top of the fourth, Hooper hit a home run of her own over the left field fence to cross the plate for the second time of the game. The freshman’s first career home run gave Georgia Tech its fourth and final score of the game for a 4-0 advantage.
After four scoreless innings, the Hoosiers put one on the board in the bottom of the fifth, their only score of the game. Neither team would score again, and freshman Naomi Dickerson came into the circle to pitch the final three outs to seal the 4-1 victory for Tech. Anderson earned the win, her second of the weekend, pitching six innings with nine strikeouts.
Up next:
The Jackets are back on the road, heading to Buies Creek to compete in the Camel Stampede at Campbell University. Tech will play Fairfield, Campbell and La Salle over the three days of competition starting on Friday, Feb. 23.
