THE FLATS – Freshman pitcher Christina Biggerstaff struck out a career-high 13 batters to lead Georgia Tech past Mount St. Mary’s, 2-0, Sunday to wrap up the GT-GSU Invite. Biggerstaff (3-1) pushed her strikeout total to 32 for the weekend with no runs, five hits and five walks in 17.2 innings pitched.

“Barbie [Christina Biggerstaff] seems to be in the zone right now,” head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “She kept us in the game. She took care of business for us and she’s working really well with our catching staff. She has a good mindset, and I’m really happy for her and proud of her.”

“[Pitching] Coach [Charlotte] Morgan says that if you put in the work during the week, that work pays off,” Biggerstaff said. “In January I wasn’t doing too well, and I just had to believe. If I walked a batter, I turned around and my teammates would say ‘hey you’ve got this one’. That pumped me up. If they still believe in me, then I’m going to go out there and do my job. I just want to thank my teammates for having my back.”

The Jackets did not allow a Mountaineer past second base, while Biggerstaff struck out every batter at least once and catcher Caitlyn Coffey caught two runners stealing second.

Georgia Tech got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring Colleen Darragh on a bases-loaded, two-out wild pitch. The Jackets added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with runners on third and second and one out, Katie Johnsky’s ground-out scored Samantha Pierannunzi

Mount St. Mary’s pitcher Marian Ruf (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in 6.0 innings pitched.

The Jackets are back in action Tuesday at No. 10 Tennessee. Action begins in Knoxville, Tenn. at 4 p.m. ET, and the game will air on ESPN3.
