THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team topped Troy, 2-1, Wednesday at Mewborn Field. With the win, the Jackets improved to 12-4 on the season and the Trojans fell to 9-10-2.

Alysha Rudnik went 2-for-2 with a double and Karly Fullem went 1-for-3 with a home run, her fourth of the season, to lead Georgia Tech.

“It was a great team win for us, especially coming off the weekend,” Head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “Kylie set the tone from the beginning and pitched a great game for us. Alysha Rudnik behind the plate is getting us strikes, throwing runners out and doing her job at the plate. She came through in the clutch today and is seeing the ball really well lately.”

The Jackets drew first blood in the second inning. Fullem stepped to the plate and rocked a solo leadoff shot over the left field wall to give Tech a 1-0 lead.

Troy knotted the game in the fourth frame, 1-1. Becca Hartley drew a walk and worked around the bases to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, and she scored on Ebony Wright’s single to left.

Rudnik pulled through in a clutch situation for the Jackets with two runners on base and one out. The senior smacked an RBI-double to the left center gap to plate Ashley Thomas in the bottom of the fifth and give Tech the one-run advantage. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native was also solid behind the plate with two runners caught stealing.

Kylie Kleinschmidt picked up her ninth win of the season and is 9-1 overall. The junior scattered seven hits and one run with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Jaycee Affeldt (4-6) suffered the loss, allowing the go ahead run on two hits in 2.0 innings pitched.

Tech is back in ACC action Saturday and Sunday with a three-game series against Notre Dame. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on both days. Sunday’s contest is Tech’s pink game and will air on ESPN3.
