THE FLATS — The Georgia Tech softball team (16-34, 6-18 ACC) fell 8-1 in its regular season finale to No. 10 Florida State (40-12, 20-3) Sunday afternoon at Mewborn Field. The Jackets await their ACC Tournament fate after next weekend’s competition.

“We take a lot of positive things from this weekend,” head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “I thought that we jumped on a very good pitching staff yesterday. We just didn’t finish, but I thought we played really well against the number one team in the conference and a top 10 team in the country.

“I thought we did a lot of good things from our hitting, to our pitching to defense. Today we competed, and we made one error and it snowballed. That’s where we have to get more mentality tough to finish. It’s something we’ve worked on and continue to work on for the future.”

Florida State broke the ice first with a two-out solo home run off the bat of Jessica Warren in the top of the first inning. The Seminoles added another run in the top of the third thanks to an RBI-single by Warren to score Maddie O’Brien.

The Jackets got that run back in the bottom of the same frame off a solo home run to center by Maddie Lionberger, her fourth home run on the season.

Florida State added two runs in the top of the sixth highlighted by Warren’s home run to give the Seminoles a 4-1 lead. Florida State added four insurance runs fueled by three hits and a Georgia Tech error in the top of the seventh to pull away, 8-1.

Kylie Kleinschmidt (6-22) suffered the loss, pitching 5.1 innings with four runs on six hits and six strikeouts. Jessica Burroughs (14-5) earned the win, throwing 4.0 innings with one run on two hits.
