Iowa’s Lisa Birocci tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and Emily Nicholls smashed her 10th home run of the tournament to lead the Hawkeyes to a 5-0 win over Big Ten foe Ohio State in the championship game of the Buzz Classic.

Georgia Tech 11, Florida A&M 3 (5 innings) Aileen Morales was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead Georgia Tech past Florida A&M, 11-3, in quarterfinals of the Buzz Classic. Offensively, Tech tallied 12 hits with four batters collecting multiple hits. Sarah Wood earned the win pitching 2.1 scoreless innings and driving in the final run of the game.

Ohio State 11, Mississippi State 0 (5 innings)
Megan Schwab went 3-for-3 with 4RBIs and two home runs, and Billie Jo Carder went 2-for-2 with 4RBIs and two homers to lead Ohio State to an 11-0 win in five innings over Mississippi State. The Buckeyes’ Jamee Juarez got the complete game shutout only allowing one hit as she struck out seven.

Auburn’s Holly Currie was 2-for-3 with an RBI and teammate Lolani Alvarez hit a two-run homer to carry the Tigers past South Carolina 6-4. Beth DiPietro went 6.2 innings striking out 4, Currie came on to get the last out to record her third save of the year.

Iowa’s Hawkeyes, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out five. Lisa Birocci picked up the save, pitching 0.1 innings. Tech’s lone run came on an RBI single in the fifth inning.Emily Nichols hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, leading to sixth-seeded Iowa’s 3-1 victory over No. 3-seeded Virginia Tech. Ali Arnold went 6.2 innings for the win.

Iowa hit 7 home runs including three by Emily Nichols who was 3-for-4 with 8 RBIs and two by Stacy May who was also 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs to cruise past Auburn 16-1. Pitcher Lisa Birrocci recorded the win, giving up three hits and no runs.

Tech got out to an early lead but Ohio State was able to come back off a two-run home run by Megan Schwab to tie the game in the 6th and went ahead by-way of a Chelsea Baker two-run shot in the top of the seventh. Jamee Juarez got the win in relief for the Buckeyes, striking out five without giving up a run.

Mississippi State 12, Troy 6
Troy slugged a grand slam to tie the game in the fifth inning, but Mississippi State tacked on six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to double up the Trojans, 12-6. The Bulldogs’ Katie Cooley finished 3-for-4, with three runs batted in.

Florida A&M 5, Winthrop 3
Florida A&M used a pair of home runs by Danielle Brown to edge out Winthrop, 5-3, in the first round of bracket play of the Buzz Classic. The Eagles hit a solo homerun in the second inning, but a pair of 2-run homers in the fourth and fifth innings by the Rattlers was too much for Winthrop to handle. Brown also picked up the win for FAMU, pitching a complete game, giving up three runs on five hits striking out two and walking a pair.

Iowa 9, Gardner-Webb 1 (five innings)
Abby Ruff’s 3-for-3, 2RBI performance combined with Lisa Birocci’s pitching was the difference as the Iowa Hawkeyes took down Gardner-Webb 9-1. In the game Birocci picked up the win for the Hawkeyes, throwing a complete game, scattering four hits and striking out six, while giving up only one run. Offensively she also contributed by hammering out a solo home run.

A walk-off two-run home run by Winthrop’s Caryn Little lifted the Eagles over Purdue, 5-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning. WU used the long ball to score all of its five runs; Kjersti Johnson (one-run), Jenny Scrymgeour (two-run) and Little (two-run). Kelli Johnson pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the win for Winthrop in the circle.

Virginia Tech 4, Mississippi State 3
Virginia Tech sent 10 batters to the plate, recording four runs on six hits, in the fourth inning to spark a 4-3 Virginia Tech win over Mississippi State. State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a three-run home run by Tanelda McDonald. Tech’s Angela Tincher struck out 12, allowing three unearned runs. Kelli Miller picked up the loss, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out five.

Ohio State 13, Boston 10
Junior Stacey Hibma homered twice and senior Karisa Evans had a career-best four RBI to lead the Ohio State softball team (8-5) to a 13-10 win over Boston University (2-6). A total of eight home runs were hit in the game as the two teams combined for 23 runs and 23 hits in the near-3 hour contest.

Florida A&M 4, St. Francis (PA) 1
Florida A&M’s Kenycia Byrd drove in two runs to lead a three-run sixth inning as the Lady Rattlers defeated St. Francis, 4-1, at the Buzz Classic. FAMU’s Alicia Mitchell picked up the win in the circle, coming in relief in the fifth inning, allowing no runs on three hits.

Mercer 2, Winthrop 1
Mercer’s Rosentreter tossed a complete-game two-hitter to lead the Bears past Winthrop, 2-1, at the Buzz Classic. MU’s Talamantes led the offensive attack with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. The Eagles’ Laura Hill hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to lead WU.

Georgia Southern 4, Middle Tennessee State 2
Georgia Southern rallied with two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth innings to overcome an early 2-0 deficit and defeat MTSU, 4-2, at the Buzz Classic. GSU’s Sam Steiner homered for the Eagles to lead the offensive attack.

Troy 16, Saint Francis (Pa.) 2 (five innings)
It was an offensive explosion for the Trojans who opened with an 11 run first inning, and then cruised to a 16-2 win over St. Francis. Troy got home runs from Brooke Powell (3R), Tamra Howren (2R) and Bonnie Belin(GS). On the mound pitcher Laine Harcourt got the win allowing only one earned run.

The 19th ranked Jackets used the longball to defeat Saint Louis University 10-0 in five innings. Tech got home runs from Christine Sheridan, Lauren Schlechte and Amy Hosier to cruise past Bilikens. Sarah Wood got the complete game shutout in five innings.

Auburn’s Paige Jones went 1-1 with three RBI, as the Tigers took down Georgia Southern 10-0 in six innings. For the Tigers pitcher Beth DiPietro got the complete game shutout striking out five and spreading around three hits.

South Carolina 15, South Dakota State
South Carolina took advantage of 6 home runs including grand slams by Schoonmaker and McKenna Hughes, both in the 11 run 4th inning, to power past South Dakota State 15-2 in five innings. In the circle Kate Pouliot got the win for USC only giving up three hits in the game.

The Tigers relied on clutch hitting by Holly Currie and Sara Ghezzi both 2-3 with 1RBI to defeat the Iowa Hawkeyes 2-1. Currie also contributed in the circle as well, throwing a complete game and holding Iowa to just one hit, while striking out 12. Counterpart Lisa Birroci struck out 7, giving her 20 K’s in two tournament games.

Viriginia Tech 8, Florida A&M 1
Virginia Tech clinched the Pool 4 title with an 8-1 win over Florida A&M Saturday evening. Megan Evans hit a two-run home run, and both Alisia Narodowski and Stephanie Savre hit solo shots to pace the offense. Katie Maynard picked up the win for the Hokies, going 4.0 innings, allowing just a hit while striking out. Megan Stone picked up the win, pitching 3.0 innings.

Georgia Tech 8, Mercer 0 (six innings)
Christine Sheridan and Savannah Brown hit back-to-back home runs to lead the Yellow Jackets past the Mercer Bears 8-0 in six innings. Three Jacket pitchers threw in the game allowing only three hits, in the combined shutout. Whitney Humphreys got the win in relief.

Gardner-Webb 14, Boston 6
The Runnin’ Bulldogs opened the game up with an eight-run third inning, due in large part to a three-run home run by Christine Barlow, who finished the game 2-4. Gardner-Webb’s Stacie Reichert got the complete game win, striking out 10 BU batters.

Iowa used five hits to score three runs and edge out Middle Tennessee State, 3-1. Five different Hawkeye batters got hits as Ali Arnold pitched a complete game, three-hitter allowing one run while striking out 14. MTSU’s Krystle Litttrell had a solo homerun for the Blue Raiders’ only run.

Purdue 6, Saint Louis 3
Purdue used homeruns by Shelli Messer and DaQueta Johnson to power past Saint Louis, 6-3. Melissa Burns scattered three runs on five hits striking out nine to collect the win for the Boilermakers. Down 4-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the Billikins used a homer by AshLeigh Williams to pull within one. Purdue added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.

Gardner-Webb 13, South Dakota State 5 (6 innings)
After Gardner-Webb jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, South Dakota State rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the second but could not hold off the GWU offensive attack as the Bulldogs tallied a run in the fourth and fifth innings and seven more in the sixth to win 13-5 in six innings. GW’s Rachel Roepel finished 3-for-5, with five RBIs.

Mercer used a pair of homeruns to upend Purdue, 7-3. The Boilermakers used a three run third inning to cut the Bears lead to two, but a run in the both the fifth and sixth innings for Mercer sealed the win.

Auburn 13, Middle Tennessee State 1 (5 innings)
The Auburn Tigers jumped all over the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. The Tigers tallied 13 runs on 13 hits, including three homeruns and six doubles. Auburn’s Paige Jones was 3-for-3 on the day, with 2 homeruns, a double, three runs and five runs batted in.

South Dakota State 5, Boston 4
After two innings, Boston jumped out to an early lead, 4-0 thanks to a two run homer by Erin McDonald. South Dakota State tied the game in the top of the fifth inning in large part due to a throwing error by the Terriers. In the sixth inning, the Jacks took the lead on an RBI single by Amy Wittgenstein.

Virginia Tech 8, St. Francis (Pa.) 0 (6 innings)
Led by freshman Stephanie Savre’s two-run home run, Virginia Tech defeated St. Francis (Pa.), 8-0 in six innings, in the opening game for Pool 4. Karie Morrison went 5.2 innings, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out three. At the plate, Tech’s Savre and Megan Evans each had two hits. For St. Francis, four different players recorded a hit.

Winthrop’s Kelli Johnson tossed a no-hitter and struck out six to lead the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Saint Louis at the Buzz Classic on Friday afternoon. The Eagles’ Kjersti Johnson scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fourth inning after taking off for home when the Billikens tossed the ball back to the pitcher.

Auburn used homeruns by Nicole Russo and Sara Dean to down Middle Tennessee State, 7-0. The Tigers’ starter Beth DiPietro pitched a complete game, surrendering just three hits one walk, while striking out four.

Ohio State 4, Gardner-Webb 0
Ohio State’s Jamee Juarez scattered three hits through seven innings to shutout the Runnin’ Bulldog’s of Gardner-Webb 4-0. The Buckeyes scratched the scoreboard in the third inning, and then added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Mississippi State 4, Florida A&M 2
Mississippi State broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth inning to down Florida A&M, 4-2. The Bulldogs used a leadoff walk and a double to plate a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning and stave off an upset bid by the Rattlers. Mississippi State’s Blair Geddings and Courtney Bures, as well as Florida A&M’s Lisa Dronkers all hit solo home runs in the first game of round-robin play for both squads.

Georgia Tech’s Whitney Humphreys threw her second complete game shutout as Georgia Tech blanked Winthrop, 2-0. Humphreys gave up no runs, on two hits, walking two and striking out three. Kirin Kumar had the game-winning single for the Jackets in the third inning.

Iowa’s Kylie Murray had a two-run home run and three RBI as the Hawkeyes beat the Georgia Southern Eagles 6-0. Iowa pitcher Ali Arnold threw a five hit shutout walking three and striking out six.

South Carolina 7, Boston 6 (9 innings)
In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Jamie Haas hit a three-run homerun to pull Boston within one, but with a runner in scoring position, the Terriers were unable to plate the runner as South Carolina held on to win 7-6 in ten innings. The Gamecocks broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth inning scoring four runs and were able to hold off a the Terriers.

Virginia Tech’s freshman Caroline Stolle’s RBI single in the eighth scored pinch runner Allyson Campbell as the Hokies beat Troy, 4-3. Angela Tincher picked up the win, going 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six. Caitlin Murphy led the Tech attack with two hits and Megan Evans’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh sent the game to extra innings. Jenny Boyd and Sally Jones each had two hits for the Trojans. Kacie Flinn took the loss in relief.

Georgia Tech freshman Aileen Morales hit a single up the middle to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning then sophomore Caitlin Lever drove in the winning run as the Yellow Jackets edged out the Boilermakers, 2-1. Jessica Sallinger pitched a complete game two hitter, walking none and striking out eleven. DaQueta Johnson hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh for the only Boilermaker run.

Nicole Gragson got the win after pitching the first four innings, while OSU’s Chelsea Baker came in and struck out the side in the fifth.

South Carolina’s McKenna Hughes (3-4, 3 RBIs) and Meghan Cornett (3-4, 4 RBIs), led the Gamecock’s to a 13-7 win over the game Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs. Freshman Kate Pouliot got her first win of the season, while Melanie Henkes pitched the last two innings to get the save.

Florida A&M were able to overcome a furious comeback by Troy to win 11-10 in 9 innings. The Trojans came back five runs in 7th inning punctuated by a three-run game tying home run with two out for Tamara Howren. The Rattlers were led offensively by Ruby Nugent who was 4-5 in the game with two RBIs. Danielle Brown picked up the win pitching the last two innings.
