THE FLATS – The 24th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team bolted to a 4-0 lead en route to a 5-2 win over Georgia State Thursday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex, snapping a two-match losing streak.

The Yellow Jackets (3-3 overall, 0-1 ACC) got a shot of confidence heading into Saturday’s match at No. 5 Georgia. The 59th-ranked Panthers fell to 3-6 overall and continue to search for their first win over Georgia Tech since 1994.

Georgia Tech cruised to the doubles points with wins in all three matches, then won in straight sets at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 singles to take a 4-0 lead and clinch the team victory. After that, the Panthers of the Colonial Athletic Association won two of the remaining three matches and Tech’s only other win – at No. 6 singles – went to a super tie-breaker.

Muriel Wacker made quick work of Chaimaa Roudami at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0, giving Georgia Tech a 2-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Natasha Prokhnevska won 6-2, 6-0 over Linn Timmermann at No. 4, then Kendal Woodard topped GSU’s Masa Grgan at No. 3, 6-1, 6-4, clinching Tech’s third win of the spring.

Georgia State’s Abigail Tere-Apisah won at No. 1 singles and in straight sets over Elizabeth Kilborn. The Panthers also won at No. 5 when Whitney Byrd topped Tech’s Megan Kurey in three sets.

Tech’s Jasmine Minor put the finishing touch on the Yellow Jackets’ victory by winning a three-set slugfest over Jocelyn Ffriend.
