THE FLATS – The No. 22 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (11-5, 6-1 ACC) snapped a four-match losing streak to Clemson (7-6, 5-3), defeating the No. 25 Tigers, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
“I felt like we played very well today,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “Clemson is a top-25 team so we knew it was going to be a tough match. Historically we had tough matches and they have a really good team. We were able to able to play well in doubles and take that momentum into singles.”
The Yellow Jackets have won six-straight ACC matches and are on a six-match winning streak. Georgia Tech kicked off the match with a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point for the 11th time this season.
Tech did start out doubles play down after falling short on court three when senior Megan Kurey and junior Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer lost to Daniel Ruiz and Joana Eidukonyte, 6-2.
The Yellow Jackets were strong on courts one and two, registering 6-3 wins on both courts. Sophomore Johnnise Renaud and junior Rasheeda McAdoo are now 10-3 in doubles after defeating Tristen Dewar and Ally Miller-Krasilnikov. The No. 18 duo of senior Kendal Woodard and sophomore Paige Hourigan stayed undefeated in conference play at 7-0 with a win against Fernanda Navarro and Ayan Broomfield.
In singles, Clemson would tie up the match at 1-1 after Ruiz defeated Anton-Ohlmeyer, 6-1, 6-1 on court six.
The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead 3-1 with victories on courts three and five. McAdoo, who is No. 117 in singles, rolled past Navarro, 6-1, 6-3 on court three. Prokopuik also picked up a straight-set victory, taking down Dewar, 6-3, 6-2 on match five.
Georgia Tech’s victory was clinched on court two by Hourigan. Hourigan, who checks in at No. 105 in the ITA singles rankings, upset No. 20 Eidukonyte, 7-5, 6-2, to secure the victory for the Yellow Jackets. Renaud, who is the No. 30 singles player, finished up right after Hourigan, defeating No. 52 Broomfield, 6-4, 6-3.
Woodard finished off the 6-1 victory with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win on court four against Miller-Krasilnikov.
The Yellow Jackets return to the court on Sunday, hosting Pittsburgh at 10 a.m.
