Final Stats

DURHAM, N.C. – The #45 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (8-6, 5-3 ACC) upset #17 Duke (12-6, 7-1 ACC), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Ambler Tennis Center.

“It was a very hard fought match,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “Both teams competed really hard. We lost the doubles point in a tiebreaker on court three but we came out and played very well in singles.”

The Yellow Jackets handed Duke its first conference loss of the season while winning its third-straight against the Blue Devils.

Georgia Tech started off the match down 1-0 after a hard fought doubles session. Sophomore Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and junior Megan Kurey paired up to defeat Ester Goldfeld and Alyssa Smith, 8-4, on court two.

The Jackets then fell in the next two doubles matches on courts one and three. #22 junior Kendal Woodard and freshman Paige Hourigan lost their first doubles match of the dual match season, falling to Annie Mulholland and Samantha Harris, 8-5, at the number one spot. In a tight match on court three, sophomore Rasheeda McAdoo and freshman Johnnise Renuad lost, 8-7 (7-2).

Losing the doubles point did not deter the Jackets.

Woodard quickly tied up the score, 1-1, after defeating #55 Samantha Harris it two quick sets, 6-3, 6-4, on court three.

The Blue Devils would then take a 3-1 lead. #109 Rachel Kahan dropped freshman Alexis Prokopuik, 6-4, 6-1. On court four, #92 Renaud also fell in two sets, 6-3, 6-1, on court one to Capra.

That’s when the Yellow Jacket rally began. Kurey cut the Jackets’ deficit to one after claiming a 7-5, 6-4, victory on court six against Chalena Scholl.

On court two, #70 Hourigan fell in her first set, 6-2, to #38 Goldfeld but bounced back in set two to blank Goldfeld, 6-0. Hourigan then cruised to a 6-3 win in the third set to knot the score at 3-3.

The match came down to court five where Anton-Ohlmeyer faced Mulholland. Anton-Ohlmeyer defeated Mulholland, 6-3, in set one. Set two was close, but Anton-Ohlmeyer stayed ahead to edge Mulholland, 7-5, and clinch the victory for the Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets return home to the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on April 3 to host Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. before heading to Clemson on April 4 at 2:30 p.m.
