THE FLATS – The No. 16 Georgia Tech women’s tennis squad defeated No. 8 Duke in a long, hard-fought match by a score of 4-3 on Friday, improving its record to 16-6 overall and 11-2 in ACC play.
The Jackets opened the scoring by taking the doubles point, which was clinched by the 13th-ranked pairing of Kendal Woodard and Paige Hourigan. To open singles, Alexis Prokopuik quickly defeated Duke’s Alyssa Smith by a score of 6-0, 6-2 to give the Jackets a 2-0 advantage. However, the Blue Devils won two straight matches against Rasheeda McAdoo and Natasha Prokhnevska to tie the score. Kendal Woodard then gave the Jackets a 3-2 lead with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory over No. 124 Ellyse Hamlin. No. 34 Johnnise Renaud nearly clinched the match for the Jackets, but fell 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 to No. 97 Chalena Scholl. No. 49 Paige Hourigan closed things out for the Jackets with a 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 41 Kaitlyn McCarthy.
“It was a really tough match – we always play really tough matches against Duke,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “They have such a great team with so many great players on it and are very well-coached, so it’s always fun to play against them. It forces our players to play at the highest level they can. We were able to play some really good tennis today and were able to get through some difficult times out there, and we were fortunate to come out with a win today. Our last couple of matches with Duke have been really tight, and it came down to the last match again, which Paige was able to close out for us. The biggest thing for us was winning the doubles point. That was key. It was a good win for us. Obviously, we have to recover and rest, but we’ll be ready to play No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday.”
The Jackets will close out the regular season on Sunday at 12 p.m. when they host No. 2 North Carolina for Senior Day.
