Final Stats

THE FLATS – Senior Muriel Wacker of the #27-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team had a Senior Day that she will never forget. Wacker’s three-set singles win on court five clinched a 4-3 win against #1 Duke for the Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Center.

“When Muriel clinched the match for us against #1 Duke on Senior Day was a storybook moment,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “When she came in at Georgia Tech, she only really played doubles. The last two years she has played singles. She has just fought and been a tremendous student-athlete, teammate and role model for all of our girls.

With the match tied at 3-3, the deciding point between the Yellow Jackets (12-8, 9-5 ACC) and the top-ranked Blue Devils (21-3, 11-3) came down to court five between Wacker and Rachel Kahan. Kahan won set one, 6-2, before Wacker came back to take set two, 6-3. After set three was tied, 2-2, Wacker won the next four-straight games to secure Tech’s victory.

“It’s so great to see it happen for our team,” Harmon said. “We had a tough year at some times. We have one of the toughest schedules in the country. Sometimes we haven’t played as well as we wanted to. Since we played Virginia, we started to pick up and play well. Today we were able to get it going. I’m very, very pleased for us. We have to make sure we get ready for the ACC Tournament next week.”

The Yellow Jackets came out firing in doubles, never trailing on any court against the Blue Devils. The #4-ranked sophomore duo of Megan Kurey and Kendal Woodard battled Hanna Mar and Annie Mulholland on court one. Kurey and Woodard recorded an 8-4 victory against the Blue Devils duo.

On courts two and three, both Tech doubles tandems jumped ahead to 5-0 leads against their Duke counter parts. Sophomore Natasha Prokhnevska and Wacker played on court two against Beatrice Capra and Alyssa Smith while freshmen Rasheeda McAdoo and Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer faced Kahan and Marainne Jodion on court two.

McAdoo and Anton-Ohlmeyer were the second doubles team to finish, capturing an 8-3 victory against Capra and Smith, clinching the doubles point for the Jackets.

Once singles began, the Blue Devils’ Jodion quickly tied up the match after defeating Anton-Ohlmeyer on court six, 6-1, 6-2.

Both Kurey and McAdoo responded with two wins for the Jackets to push Tech ahead, 3-1, in the match. On court two, Kurey topped Chalena Scholl in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Kurey is now 4-1 at the number two singles spot this season.

McAdoo extended her winning-streak to five matches after a 6-1, 6-3 victory against #111-ranked Smith on court four.

On court three, Prokhnevska lost her match to #35-ranked Mar, 6-0, 6-2 putting the overall score at 3-2, still in favor of the Jackets. The score was back to a tie after Woodard fell to #5-ranked Capra at the number one spot. Capra took set one, 6-2 against Woodard. Set two was tight between the two opponents, but Capra wound up winning the tiebreaker, 8-6, to win the second set, 7-6.

Next up, the Yellow Jackets travel to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Championships which begin on April 24 and run until April 27. The seedings for the championship will be announced by the ACC office on Sunday.
