GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The #24 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team’s (17-10) season came to an end with a 4-0 loss to #5 Florida (23-3) in the second round of the NCAA Championship at the Ring Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
“I thought this was a really good match,” head coach Rodney Harmon. “Florida is a really good team and they always have great teams. I feel like they are playing really, really well. We’ve played a number of top teams this year… I was happy with the way my team played. I thought they did a good job.”
The Yellow Jackets fought it out in doubles but fell short against the Gators and started off the match in a 1-0 hole. The junior duo of Kendal Woodard and Natasha Prokhnevska dropped their match to Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock, 8-2, at the number two position.
On court one, junior Megan Kurey and sophomore Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer battled back from being down 4-1 to the #6 pair of Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan to pull within 6-5 of the top ranked pair. The Gators won the next two games to win the match 8-5 and give the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the match.
On court three, freshman Johnnise Renaud and sophomore Rasheeda McAdoo were in a tight match against Spencer Liang and Peggy Porter. The score was knotted at 7-7 before the Gators clinched the first point.
The Yellow Jackets then lost three singles matches, falling to 8-6 in round of 32 matches.
Kurey suffered her first singles loss in the past nine matches, falling to #58 Woolcock, 6-1, 6-0 at the number five spot. On court three, Woodard faced #28 Brianna Morgan and suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss that put the Gators ahead 3-0.
The match was clinched in favor of Florida after #13 Kuhlman won in straight-sets against McAdoo, 6-3, 6-2.
Anton-Ohlmeyer and Renaud each won a set against Florida. Anton-Ohlmeyer won set one against Porter, 6-2, and playing to a 5-5 tie in set two on court six. Renaud, who is the #101-ranked singles player, battled the #3-ranked player Austin on court one. Renaud edged Austin 6-4 in the first set after breaking a 4-4 tie and fell in set two, 6-1. Austin held a 1-0 lead in the third frame before the match was clinched.
The loss concludes Georgia Tech’s 2015 season. The Yellow Jackets wrapped up the season with a 17-10 record, advanced to the ACC Tournament Championship match and made their 16th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Woodard and freshman Paige Hourigan will head to the NCAA Individual Championships which begin on May 20 in Waco, Texas. Hourigan will compete in single while both Hourigan and Woodard will compete in doubles.
