May 12, 2007

ATLANTA–Senior Tarryn Rudman earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory in singles and also won in doubles to lead the No. 3 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team to a 4-0 shutout of Furman in the first round of the NCAA Atlanta Regional at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets (24-4), who will face Kentucky in Sunday’s regional final at 12 noon, won their 16th straight match and earned their 24th victory of the season, both school records. Furman, the Southern Conference champion, finished its season at 16-10.

After earning the doubles point, Tech quickly dispatched of the Paladins in singles with straight set victories by Rudman at the No. 6 flight, Christy Striplin at No. 5 and Amanda Craddock at No. 3. When Craddock won her flight to clinch the match, Tech’s Amanda McDowell was leading 5-2 in the second set, and the Jackets were also up a set on courts one and two.

“I’m really pleased that we came out with a lot of intensity and focus and were able to win so quickly,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton, who has led the Jackets to the NCAAs for the eighth straight year. “In a tournament situation, especially in this heat, being able to conserve a little energy for tomorrow is always a factor. We’ll have a tough match tomorrow, whoever we face.

“Give credit to Furman. They’ve had a great season. They’re a tough team and a really good program.”

Rudman earned her win over Natasa Manojlovic, while Striplin dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lauren Tomory, 6-0, 6-1. Facing Bonnie Baird at No. 3 singles, Craddock was tied at 4-all in the first set before winning seven straight games and eight of nine for the 6-4, 6-1 win.

Tech jumped to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles points as Rudman teamed with Kirsten Flower for an 8-2 victory over Lauren Tomory and Lisa Bornt-Davis at the No. 3 flight. Kristi Miller and and Whitney McCray, the nation’s third-ranked doubles team, won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles over Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic.

Sunday’s NCAA Atlanta Regional final between Georgia Tech and Kentucky is scheduled for 12 noon, and tickets are available at the door. The winner of that match advances to the NCAA Round of 16, beginning May 18 in Athens, Ga.
