Hourigan, Jones Advance in NCAA Doubles Championship

ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia Tech women’s tennis opened NCAA Doubles Championship play in Athens on Thursday represented by two doubles tandems. Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones advanced to the round of 16 on Friday with a hard-fought win.

“Today was two incredibly tough matches that came down to the wire,” commented head coach Rodney Harmon. “It was a great win by Paige and Kenya. Rasheeda [McAdoo] finished out a great career at Georgia Tech today. It was difficult to see her collegiate career end with such a tight match against a great team from Kentucky.”

DOUBLES UPDATE: No. 23 Rasheeda McAdoo/Johnnise Renaud opened play against No. 6 Mami Adachi/Aldila Sutjiadi of Kentucky. The Wildcats snagged the first set 6-2, but the Jackets kept a close hold in the second set. On serve with Tech leading at 6-5, the Jackets broke the Wildcats in the final game to take the second set, 7-5, and force a tiebreak. Kentucky proved prosperous in the tiebreak, winning 10-6 to take the match.

Taking on No. 11 Anna Danilina/Ingrid Neel of Florida, No. 29 Hourigan/Jones made quick work of the Gators in the first set, claiming the set 6-1. With the Jackets trailing 3-4 in the second set, Florida broke to go up 5-3. The Gators served out the second set, 6-3, to force a deciding tiebreak. Hourigan/Jones advanced to the round of 16, pocketing the tiebreak, 10-6.
