Woodard, Kurey Garner All-ACC Honors

April 23, 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech sophomore Kendal Woodard has been selected to the All-ACC First Team and sophomore Megan Kurey has been selected to the All-ACC Second Team, conference commissioner John Swofford announced Wednesday.

Individual honors, as well as the All-ACC teams, were determined by a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches. Woodard and Kurey are the 19th and 20th Georgia Tech student-athletes selected to All-ACC women’s tennis teams. This is second year in a row that Woodard has been honored on the All-ACC First Team. This is Kurey’s first all-conference award of her career.

Woodard has seen time on time on courts one and two this season, going 8-11 overall in dual matches. She is 6-8 on court one and has captured two wins against nationally ranked opponents. Woodard’s win on court one against Old Dominion clinched the 4-0 win for the Jackets in their home opener this season.

In the fall, Woodard debuted in the preseason singles ranked at #67. She made two appearances during the regular season, checking in at number 94 and number 124.

Kurey has had an impressive sophomore campaign, working her way up from playing on courts five and six in the first dual matches of the season, to closing out the season on court two. Kurey is 4-1 at the number two spot. She is 12-6 in dual matches and 9-4 in ACC play. She defeated one nationally ranked opponent this season.

Kurey has clinched a team-high five matches for the Jackets. The matches Kurey has clinched were against #34 Florida State, #46 Wake Forest, Maryland, #64 N.C. State and #66 Virginia Tech.

When Kurey and Woodard step on the doubles court together, the tandem is one of the best in the country. Kurey and Woodard have gone 11-5 in dual matches, 8-3 in ACC play and have capture nine wins against nationally ranked opponents. The duo are ranked as number six in this week’s ITA doubles rankings, but have reached their highest ranking of number one this season in February.

Kurey and Woodard won the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships doubles title in November. The pair is 25-9 together this year and 9-8 against nationally ranked opponents. Kurey and Woodard also won the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Doubles Title in the fall.

The Jackets head to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Tournament on Thursday at 3 p.m. as the number six seed. Tech will face the winner of the No. 11 Virginia Tech and No. 14 N.C. State.
