#ProJackets: Falconi Reaches Third Round of French Open

May 28, 2015

PARIS — Irina Falconi, a former member of the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team, advanced to the third round of the French Open this morning after defeating Bulgaria’s Sesil Karatantcheva in the second round.

Falconi rolled past France’s wild card Manon Arcangioli, 6-2, 6-0 in the first round. Falconi, who is ranked as the #84 singles player in the world, was paired up against Karatantcheva, who checks in at #104, in round two. Karatantcheva won the first set, 6-3, but that didn’t deter the former Yellow Jacket who went on to win the next two sets, 6-1, 6-2, and secure her trip to the third round.

Falconi faces Germany’s Julia Goerges, who is ranked 68th in the world, in the third round tomorrow. Goerges defeated Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, the number five seed, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), in the second round.

Falconi is just one of four American’s left in the competition in women’s singles, joining Serena Williams, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys.

Falconi finished her career at Georgia Tech with 70-15 overall singles mark. She was a two-time All-American and All-ACC selection. Falconi won the 2009 ITA All-American singles title and teamed with former Yellow Jacket  to capture the 2008 ITA All-American doubles title. Falconi closed out her stellar two-year career at Georgia Tech ranked No. 1 in the nation after compiling a 40-3 singles record last season and was named the 2010 Campbell’s/ITA National Player of the Year and the 2010 ACC Player of the Year. She turned pro following her sophomore season.
