THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis freshman Johnnise Renaud heads north to New York to compete in the prestigious U.S. Open Junior Championship at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center National Tennis Center.

“I’m so excited for Johnnise that she gets to go to the Junior U.S. Open,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “She has to play in the qualifying round because she couldn’t play many juniors events this summer. She decided to not play a lot of junior events so she could come to summer school which I thought was a great idea. Johnnise was ranked at one time as the number 30 player by the ITF.”

Renaud will play in the qualifying draw of 32 beginning on Friday, August 29 at 10 a.m. on court P20. She will face Australia’s Destanee Aiava. The main draw of the U.S. Open Junior Championship runs from Sunday, August 31 to Sunday, September 7.

“Out of 64 players, only one is coming out on top,” Renaud said. “I don’t let the numbers get to me. I just go out and do what I do best – play tennis.”

Renaud, whose career high ITF ranking is number 30, is no stranger to playing at Junior Grand Slam tournaments. Renaud played in the 2013 U.S. Open Junior Championship and the Wimbledon Junior Championships. She also competed in the Canadian Open Junior Championship where she advanced to the round of 32 after defeating Japan’s Hikari Yamamot.

The North Miami native was a five-star blue chip recruit and has been ranked as high as number three by the Tennis Recruiting Network. Before coming to Tech this summer to get a head start on class work, Renaud won two tournaments in 2014, taking the title in the Open du Conseil General in Guadeloupe and the RVTA Junior 1 in South Africa.

Renaud and the rest of the Yellow Jackets kick off the 2014 fall season on September 19 when they host the Georgia Tech Invitational. Georgia State, LSU and N.C. State will compete at the GT Invitational which will be held at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
