Jackets to Open 2018 at Orange & Purple Classic

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech track and field readies for its first full meet of the 2017-18 season when it heads to Clemson for the Orange and Purple Classic on Saturday, Jan. 6. The full day of events is slated to begin at 10 a.m.

Saturday will mark the first of three regular-season trips to Clemson for the Yellow Jackets for the indoor season. Tech will also compete in the Bob Pollock Invitational (Jan. 26-27) and the Tigar Paw Invitational (Feb. 9-10). In addition to the regular season, GT will also head to Clemson for this year’s ACC Indoor Championships (Feb. 22-24).

Among the teams participating on Saturday are Clemson, Bethune-Cookman, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Florida International, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, J.C. Smith, North Carolina A&T and Tennessee Tech.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a December meet where they competed in the BSC Icebreaker in Alabama. Compiling four first-place finishes in the meet, Tech was led by Pharist O’Neal who took first in the 60 meter dash and Raven Stewart who took first in the 60 meter hurdles. Madeline Hammond and Bria Matthews also took titles in the high jump and long jump, respectively.

For the men, Tyson Spears fell just outside the top 5 in the 60 meter dash while John Lyons took second in the 800 meter dash.
