TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Three Yellow Jackets won their events Friday as the Georgia Tech track and field team finished the first full day of competition at the Alabama Relays to open the 2015 outdoor season. Jazmyne Taylor won the 400 meters, Bailey Weiland won the high jump and Brandon Lasater won the 1,500 meters.
“The men had a very good day,” head men’s track coach Grover Hinsdale said. “Brandon Lasater looked very good with his win tonight. Zachary Gunnz had a PR in the 100m and Nathan Daniel had a PR in the pole vault. I was very pleased with the effort from everyone throughout the day.”
“The women had a good start to the Alabama Relays and to the outdoor season,” head women’s track coach Alan Drosky said. “There were great efforts by Jazmyne and Bailey in winning their events. Jazmyne got a nice PR and Bailey jumped well despite the wet surface from the rain. Angelica [Henderson] had a strong effort to finish second as well in the 400 meters. We’ve got a lot going on tomorrow and we’re looking for some great efforts.”
Taylor won the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 55.83, followed by teammate Angelica Henderson in second in a time of 56.43. Domonique Hall also finished in the top 10 in eighth place (57.23).
In the middle distance events, Lasater won the men’s 1,500 meters in a time of 3:47.17 and for the women Morgan Jackson took third (4:32.22).
In her first collegiate outdoor meet, Weiland won the high jump with a height of 1.75m (5-8.75).
The women’s 4×200-meter relay team run by Hall, Taylor, Henderson and Alex Braxton kicked off Friday with a seventh-place finish in a time of 1:39.47. Also for the women’s relays, the sprint medley team of Marinice Bauman, Ama Larbi, Shannon Innis and Christina Pensock placed seventh (4:06.91).
Larbi also placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:00.21. Zachary Gunnz logged a third-place finish in the 100 meters in a time of 10.78.
In the field events, freshman Ryan Thomas took fifth in the triple jump (14.77m; 48-5.50) and fellow freshman Preston Smith placed 10th (14.21m; 46-7.50).
In the pole vault, Nathan Daniel improved his outdoor-best mark to 5.05m (16-6.75) to place fifth.
Ashleigh Uhl placed 10th in the javelin on Thursday night with a time of 32.85m (107-9).
