THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior setter Kaleigh Colson recorded her first double-double of the season, but the Yellow Jacket volleyball team (2-1) fell to the College of Charleston (3-0) in three sets (22-25, 19-25, 15-25) Sunday in the final match of the Georgia Tech Invitational.

Colson recorded her first double-double of the season with 25 assists and a team-high 13 digs. Ivona Kolak led the Jackets with 10 kills and Jennifer Percy added eight of her own.

Colson hit .542 throughout the tournament and Kolak collected 22 kills as both players earned all-tournament team honors. Tech junior Zoey Morton was named libero of the tournament with 28 digs and a team-best 3.11 digs per set.

Although both teams hit .000 in the first set, Georgia Tech’s 10 service errors and 23 attacking errors were the difference in the match as the Cougars held Tech to a .120 hitting clip.

“I think the difference in the match was errors,” Head coach Tonya Johnson said. “We were not prepared to compete today. I’m disappointed in how flat we came out and how undisciplined we were throughout the course of that match. There were a lot of areas we need to get better in, but a lot of that starts with having the right mentality when you step on the court to play every night.”

College of Charleston set the tempo in the first set and jumped out to a 10-5 lead. Georgia Tech worked back into the match and tied the match 21-21, but College of Charleston went on a four-point run to close out the opening set.

The Cougars continued their momentum into game two and out-hit the Jackets .484 to .310. With College of Charleston in the lead, Tech laced together four points behind back-to-back service aces by Colson to pull the Jackets within two points, 13-11, but the Cougars held on for a 25-19 victory.

The third set was neck-and-neck until the Cougars went on a six-point rally that extended their lead, 17-8. Chanell Clark-Bibbs and Percy put down three kills each in the set, but College of Charleston came out on top, 25-15.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Friday, Sept. 6 when they travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Sheraton Lobo Airport Classic hosted by New Mexico. Tech’s first match up is set for 12:30 p.m. ET against Idaho State.
