MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Michigan (5-0) on Saturday at the K-State Invite. Senior Teegan Van Gunst recorded her 1,000th career kill against the Wolverines.

How It Happened
The first set was neck and neck at 9-8 with Michigan in the lead until the Wolverines went on a 7-2 to put some distance between the teams, 16-10. The momentum stayed in the Wolverines’ favor and they captured the opening game 25-16.

The Jackets held a 7-5 lead in game two, but Michigan went on a six point rally to take the lead 11-7. The Wolverines turned that lead into 16-8 after a handful of Georgia Tech attacking errors.

Tied 8-8 in game three, Georgia Tech took the lead 9-8 on a kill by Annika Van Gunst. The Jackets never lost the lead and won 25-19 to force a fourth frame.

Michigan regained momentum in the fourth game. Down 17-13, the Jackets fought back to pull within one point, 22-21, but the Wolverines clung to their lead to win 25-22.

Quote
“It was a tough loss this morning,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “Offensively we were just not able to produce the way we needed to in order to compete with a great team like Michigan. We made too many unforced errors. The positive is that we finish playing better than we started and we hope to carry that momentum over to tonight’s match.

“Teegan picked it up as the match got going and was able to play a pretty solid match for us. I am proud of her career accomplishment and I look forward to a lot more kills from her for the rest of this season. Annika played a great match defensively, dug a lot of balls and helped us stay in the game.

“Gabi played a good match as well, and started to take some smart swings. I hope this match helps her continue to build her confidence that she can be a terminating, point scoring factor in our offense.”
