ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Idaho State (3-2) defeated the Georgia Tech volleyball team (2-2) in straight-sets Friday (25-21, 25-19, 25-20) to open the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic hosted by New Mexico. The Jackets face UC Riverside later Friday at 7 p.m. ET to conclude the first day of the tournament.

Tech senior setter Kaleigh Colson was the most accurate player on the Jacket offense, slamming down six kills on nine attempts for a team-best .556 hitting percentage. Colson recorded her second double-double of the season with 19 assists and 12 digs.

In the teams’ first matchup in program history, serving errors plagued Tech. The Jackets gave up 12 points off of errant serves.

In set one,Georgia Tech had a one-point lead, 6-5, until Hayley Farrer subbed in for the Bengals and served the next five points. From there, the Bengals were able to maintain at least a two-point lead and pushed the score to 15-13.

Georgia Tech mounted a comeback sparred by a kill from Colson and knotted the score 16-16 on a kill from Teegan Van Gunst. The Bengals turned the table and went on a 6-point rally fueled by a pair of kills from Tressa Lyman and Makenzie Filer to go along with two Tech attacking errors, and rode that momentum to a 25-21 victory.

The Jackets and Bengals matched each other point for point in set two. With the score tied, 9-9, three-straight points from ISU gave the Bengals a 12-9 lead sparking a Yellow Jacket timeout.

Following the short break, ISU put up four quick points and kept that rhythm to make the score 20-16. Georgia Tech stepped on the gas pedal and laced together a three-point run to pull within one point, 20-19, forcing an Idaho State timeout, but the Bengals answered with five-straight points to win set two, 25-19.

Idaho State held Georgia Tech to a .036 hitting clip in the third and what proved to be the final set. The Jackets were within striking distance until a 5-point rally from the Bengals opened the game up, 13-4. Georgia Tech never found its rhythm and fell in the third stanza, 25-20.
