Volleyball Wins Rematch at Coastal Carolina, 3-2

CONWAY, S.C. – Senior Teegan Van Gunst put down 26 kills to lead the Georgia Tech volleyball team (9-3) in a five-set thrilling win in the rematch against the Chanticleers (9-3) on Saturday night.

How It Happened
Set one began as a see-saw game. The set was tied 12-12 when Coastal Carolina used a 6-1 run to take an 18-13 lead and gain momentum to win the set 25-17.

Georgia Tech evened the match 1-1 with a 25-21 second-set win. The Jackets took a 15-14 lead and made it 20-14 advantage. Coastal Carolina fought back within two, 21-19, but the Jackets held on for the win.The momentum pendulum swung back in the favor of the Chanticleers in set three who won 25-18.

Down 2-1 in the match, Georgia Tech did not give up. Set four featured three lead changes and six tied scores, including a 21-21 knot late in the game. Tech put together a 4-1 rally fueled by a pair of kills and an ace by Teegan Van Gunst to win 25-22.

Tied 8-8 in the final frame, three straight kills from Teegan Van Gunst put Tech in the lead 11-8. Coastal Carolina recovered to tie the game 12-12. The Jackets rallied off the next three points to claim the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

“This win means a lot to our group,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “We knew it was going to be another fight, on their home court, and we stay composed and together. Teegan led the way offensively, but I think the more important things we did don’t show up on stats. We played together as team; we didn’t give up on any points and earned this win.

“Our pre-season schedule was very tough and we superseded the expectations. Now we shift our focus to ACC play and our goal is to continue to get better.”
