THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (9-11, 2-5 ACC) fell 3-0 (18-25, 14-25, 22-25) to the Pittsburgh Panthers (16-2, 4-1) Friday night in the Yellow Jackets’ annual Dig Pink match.

Courtney Felinski led Georgia Tech with seven kills and two solo blocks, while the Jackets out-blocked Pitt nine to three. Lauren Pitz added five kills on nine swings with no errors for a .556 hitting percentage.

Pitt out-hit the Yellow Jackets .272 to .121 and the Panthers’ tough serving with five aces kept Georgia Tech out of system.

“I think Pitt started off serving us really well,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “Defensively, we were in the right places, but our execution wasn’t what we needed. The mentality that we need to understand is that we need to bring it every night and we’re going to have to do that against Miami, another tough opponent.

“Pitt kept it coming and they distributed the ball well. We averaged maybe eight and six kills in the first two games and that’s not enough to compete with a team of that caliber.”

The Panthers won the opening frame, 25-18, and kept that momentum in game two, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Pitt hit the gas pedal and led for the rest of the game, winning 25-14.

Georgia Tech’s energy ignited in the third set as the Jackets out-hit Pitt .286 to .244 and held the lead until Pitt clawed back to tie the game 14-14 and again 17-17.

The Jackets went on a three-point run to go up 20-17 thanks to a pair of kill by Teegan Van Gunst, but the Panthers would find their way back into the game and knot it 22-22. Pitt scored the next three points to escape the set, 25-22, and win the match, 3-0.

The Jackets are back in action Sunday at Miami. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
