Volleyball Defeats Boston College, 3-1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Five Yellow Jackets recorded 10-plus kills in the Georgia Tech volleyball team’s (15-9, 6-6 ACC) 3-1 victory at Boston College (10-14, 2-10) on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
The first set was a closely contested battle until the very end. Each team traded set-point, and tied 26-26 the Yellow Jackets scored the final two points on a kill by Ashley Askin and an ace from Annika Van Gunst to win 28-26.

The Yellow Jackets trailed throughout game two until they tied the score 18-18. From there, Georgia Tech went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-18 lead. Up by one, 24-23, the Jackets scored the final point on a Teegan Van Gunst kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match.  

Boston College was fast out of the gate in game three and the Yellow Jackets had to play catch up. Down 24-20 in the game, the Yellow Jackets scored three straight to pull within one, but the Eagles were able to score the point they needed to win, 25-23, and stay alive in the match.

The fourth set was highlighted by six tied scores and two lead changes. Knotted 15-15, the Jackets scored three straight points to gain momentum, 18-15, and carried that momentum to win the game 25-20.

“It was great to see our offense more balanced,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “I felt like both serving and passing were good and consistent, and we were able to distribute the ball and also to dig a lot of balls.

“I’m proud of their resilience on the road this weekend and I am looking forward to next week as we focus on continuing our improvement both as individuals and as a team. There is still so much room for growth and we need to be a better team by Friday when we face Duke.”

– Teegan Van Gunst tallied 19 kills to lead Georgia Tech, and Sydney Wilson, Annika Van Gunst, Lauren Pitz and Ashley Askin each tallied 11 kills.
– The Yellow Jackets have won the last 17 matches against the Eagles.
– Teegan Van Gunst scored her 15th double-double of the season with 19 kills and 19 digs. Through 24 matches this season, she has recorded a double-double in two-thirds of the matches.
– Annika Van Gunst tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 18 digs
– London Ackermann put up 16 digs, and Rebecca Martin was one dig away from a double-double with 49 assists.
– Lauren Pitz hit .320 with 11 kills on 25 swings and just three errors, and Ashley Askin hit at a .333 clip.

What’s Next
The Yellow Jackets return home to host Duke on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will air on ESPN3.
