“We played well,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “I think the first game was key and we had a chance to finish that game, but we didn’t start as strong as we needed to start. We kept trying to fight back and they got some good momentum in the fifth game and made some key plays.”

The Demon Deacons narrowly escaped set one, 25-22. The Jackets out-hit the Deacons .346 to .294 and had three blocks to Wake Forest’s zero. A huge block by a pair of freshmen Ashley Askin and Sydney Wilson put the Yellow Jackets within one point, 23-22, but Wake Forest scored the last two points to take the opening frame.

The Jackets jumped out to a 10-3 lead in game two, behind the blocking efforts of Teegan Van Gunst, and kills by Wilson and Askin. Tech hit at a whopping .680 for the set, holding the Demon Deacons to a .276 hitting clip.

The Yellow Jackets worked their way back from a 13-8 deficit to knot the score 13-13 behind the serving of Rebecca Martin in game three. Wake Forest fought back, going on an 8-3 rally to take a 21-16 lead. The Jackets couldn’t recover and the Demon Deacons won the game, 25-20, to go up 2-1 in the match.

Game four was a back-and-forth affair. Tied 14-14, the Jackets took the lead for good with the next two points capped off by a Lauren Pitz kill, 16-14. The Jackets led by as many as five, 22-17, before winning the set 25-19 on a block by Martin and Wilson.

Wake Forest led 8-2 at the switch in game five and kept its foot on the gas pedal, winning 15-6 to capture the match 3-2.

The Jackets are back in action Sunday, Nov. 9 at NC State. First serve in Raleigh is set for 2 p.m.
