Volleyball Falls at No. 8 UNC in Five

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (21-7, 12-4 ACC) had No. 8 North Carolina (23-3, 15-1) on the ropes with a 2-0 lead in the match, but the Tar Heels rallied back to win the match 3-2 on Saturday night at Carmichael Arena.

How It Happened
The Yellow Jackets recovered from a 13-7 deficit to tie the game 19-19 in set one. North Carolina regained the lead 22-21, but Georgia Tech rattled off the next four points to win the game 25-22.

Georgia Tech took the lead for good 13-12 and never looked back in set two. The Jackets used .355 hitting and six kills from Annika Van Gunst to put the set away 25-18.

North Carolina regrouped after the intermission and came out hot winning games three and four, 25-14 and 25-15, respectively.

It was tied 4-4 in game five when the Tar Heels scored six in a row to take a 10-4 lead. North Carolina didn’t let up and won the set 15-8.

It’s a very good team on the other side,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “I think we came out very confident in what we were doing. We were able to serve them really well and were able to score a lot with our offense. They [UNC] came out in set three and made some adjustments. They were able to get momentum and they are a very good team. It was a good match for us I just wish we would have played them a little harder toward the end.”

-Teegan Van Gunst led the Jackets with 14 kills to go along with 15 digs for her 16th double-double, and served four aces.
-Gabriela Stavnetchei tallied 13 kills and Annika Van Gunst added 12 kills.
-London Ackermann held down the back row with 18 digs.
-Lauren Pitz had eight kills on .467 hitting.

The Jackets host their final two home matches of the season next weekend. Georgia Tech hosts Louisville on Friday at 7 p.m., followed up by a 1 p.m. matchup against Notre Dame on Sunday for the Jackets’ Senior Night.
