BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (12-17, 5-11 ACC) fell in straight sets (18-25, 23-25,14-25) at Virginia Tech (15-14, 8-8) Saturday night at Cassell Coliseum.

Teegan Van Gunst led all players with 11 kills on 28 swings with no errors for a .393 hitting percentage. Courtney Felinski added seven kills and freshman Sydney Wilson chipped in six. London Ackermann had 15 digs on defense and Teegan Van Gunst tallied nine.

“Virginia Tech played great volleyball tonight,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “Their offense was very effective especially with their middles. We had some strong individual performances, but to win matches in such a strong conference as the ACC, you need a complete team effort. We are playing very well at times, but we are struggling with staying consistent.

“We have a short turn around before we face a very good Miami team and we need to make sure we work hard to finish the season strong.”

The Hokies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening frame and never let up, defeating the Yellow Jackets 25-18. Georgia Tech out-hit Virginia Tech .375 to .333, but the difference was at the serving line where the Hokies gained six points on four aces and two Georgia Tech serving errors.

The Jackets took their first lead of the match on an Ashley Askin kill to make it 7-6 in game two. The Hokies went to work and tied it 11-11, then rattled off three-straight for a 14-11 advantage.

Georgia Tech continued to fight back, as a block from Teegan Van Gunst and Sydney Wilson pulled the Jackets within two and a kill by Felinski had the Jackets down by one, 22-21. The Hokies held on to escape the set, 25-23.

The Yellow Jackets had the lead early in the third game, but the Hokies put together a 12-3 run to take a 17-10 lead. After that run, Virginia Tech didn’t relinquish the lead and put the set away 25-14 and the match 3-0.

The Jackets are back in action next week with their final matches of the season when they host Miami on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Friday against Clemson at 3 p.m.
