Marcela Oliveira, Taylor McColskey Named Assistant Volleyball Coaches

April 21, 2014

THE FLATS – Marcela Oliveira and Taylor McColskey have been named the Georgia Tech assistant volleyball coaches, head coach Michelle Collier announced Monday.

Oliveira, a former standout volleyball player at South Florida, will work primarily with the outside hitters.

“I am excited about the addition of Marcela to our staff,” Collier said. “She brings in a lot of experience from having played volleyball since a very young age, and she will be a great role model for the players.”

Oliveira comes to Georgia Tech after spending the last year as the assistant coach for the Jacksonville Dolphins. While there, she served as the recruiting coordinator, and helped the program win the 2013 Atlantic Sun Tournament and earn the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004.

“This is truly an opportunity of a lifetime and I would like to thank Athletic Director Mike Bobinski, SWA Theresa Wenzel, and all supporting staff, for believing and trusting me,” Oliveira said. “I am excited to get in the gym with this talented group of young ladies and start working.”

Oliveira started her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Southeastern Oklahoma State University for the 2010 season. She worked specifically with the outside hitters and assisted with recruiting.

A standout outside hitter at USF, Oliveira played for the Bulls from 2006-09 where she earned three BIG EAST all-conference honors. She also received three all-region and All-America (a program first) accolades. Prior to the 2009 campaign, Oliveira was tabbed the conference preseason Player of the Year.

She finished her Bulls’ career ranked second all-time in kills (1,801) behind Coach Collier’s program record 2,729 kills. She is also fourth in aces with 219 and ninth in digs at 1,079.

Following her collegiate career, Oliveira played professionally for AYS Volleyball in Argentina for the 2011 season. She also played for team Florida Wave in the Premier Volleyball League in 2012.

A native of Fortaleza, Brazil, Oliveira graduated from USF in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

McColskey joins the Tech staff from Jacksonville University, where he served as the volunteer assistant coach in 2013.

“Taylor is a passionate coach who will bring a lot of energy to the gym,” Collier said. “He will also serve as our recruiting coordinator and defensive players coach.”

McColskey’s primary responsibilities at Jacksonville were scouting and video breakdown, training middle blockers and coordinating recruiting visits. He will take on a similar role at Georgia Tech.

“I would like to thank Athletic Director Mike Bobinski, Associate AD/SWA Theresa Wenzel and Michelle Collier for this unbelievable opportunity,” McColskey said. “Having worked with coach Collier at Jacksonville University, I understand her expectations, as well as her system. I look forward to being a part of the exciting future of the Georgia Tech Women’s Volleyball program.”

In 2013, McColskey helped the Dolphins improve to a 30-4 record from a 10-24 record a year prior, and win the 2013 Atlantic Sun Tournament. He assisted middle blocker Kylie Jacob to earn second team all-conference honors and earn all-tournament team accolades.

Prior to joining the Jacksonville staff, McColskey worked for a variety of volleyball clubs over the last six years throughout the Florida region, including Ocean Breeze, Jupiter and most recently the Instinct Volleyball Club.

McColskey served as an assistant coach for the boys’ USA Select A1 team at the 2013 USA High Performance Championships.

McColskey played two years (2007-2009) as a defensive specialist and outside hitter at King College in Bristol, Tenn. He graduated from Palm Beach State in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in supervision and management.
