Volleyball Set For Tennessee Invitational This Weekend

THE FLATS - The Georgia Tech volleyball team travels to Knoxville, Tenn. to take part in the Tennessee Invitational Friday and Saturday at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Georgia Tech (4-5) begins the tournament with a 7 p.m. ET match Friday against Tennessee (7-4). The Yellow Jackets play back-to-back matches Saturday, starting at 12:30 p.m. against Coastal Carolina and 4:30 p.m. vs. Jacksonville State.
Tech is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic. The Jackets ended the weekend on a high note with a 3-0 sweep of the GT Courtyard Classic-champion Connecticut.
Senior Quinn Evans recorded nine blocks in the match vs. Connecticut, three of them were solo stuffs, along with a .556 hitting percentage (5-for-9) en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore Chanell Clark-Bibbs was also named to the all-tournament team after hitting .231 on the weekend, tallying a career-high three solo blocks against Connecticut and serving up six aces over the weekend.
Evans is tied for fifth in the ACC and leads the Jackets in blocks per set average (1.31). As a team, Georgia Tech is fourth in the league in service aces (46; 1.48 per set).
The Lady Vols are looking to snap a three-game losing skid this weekend. Tennessee went 1-3 at the Lady Vol Comcast Classic in the team’s most recent action. Senior Whitney Heeres was the Lady Vols’ all-tournament recipient. She recorded 29 kills and four solo blocks throughout the tournament.
Jamie Lea leads the offense with 139 kills and a 3.47 kills per set average. Ashley Mariani is the other go-to player on offense with 123 kills and 3.08 kills per game.
Scouting Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers have won four of the last five matches and posted a 3-1 record at the KSU Owls Classic over the weekend where senior Lauren Alejo became just the sixth player in Coastal Carolina history to reach 2,000 career assists.
Lian Bernett and Kindra Bailey lead the Chants offense with 96 and 84 kills, respectively. Bailey also leads the squad in blocks (27) and blocks per set (0.84).
Scouting Jacksonville State
The Gamecocks are 6-6 and are currently enjoying a four-game winning streak. Junior Nicole Merget was named OVC co-Offensive Player of the Week after helping JSU win the 2013 ISTAP Collegiate Cup Championship hosted by Alabama State.
Merget was named to the all-tournament team after finishing the week with 36 kills on a .435 attack percentage while helping the Gamecocks repeat as ISTAP Champions. JSU swept all four opponents over the weekend while posting a .356 team hitting percentage.
