Once again, WQXI-AM, "Sportstalk 790 The Zone," is the Atlanta flagship for Georgia Tech football and basketball. Also returning to the network for the 2011 season is True Oldies 106.7 WYAY-FM to provide complete FM coverage , covering much of the state of Georgia. An additional 32+ stations make up the Yellow Jacket Radio Network, carrying a heavy schedule of game broadcasts for football and basketball as well as the weekly live coaches call-in shows.
The radio broadcast team for Yellow Jacket football is headlined by popular play-by-play announcer Wes Durham, the Voice of the Yellow Jackets since 1995.
Durham, who also serves as Director of Broadcasting for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association, is a five-time selection as the Sportscaster of the Year in the state of Georgia and the recipient of the "Furman Bisher Award" from the Atlanta Sports Council. He is also the radio voice of the Atlanta Falcons.
Joining Durham in the booth is former Rambling Wreck and NFL quarterback Rick Strom, who begins his fourth season as color analyst following three seasons as the sideline reporter.
Strom played for the Jackets from 1983-87, starting 16 games at quarterback over the 1986-87 seasons. Following graduation from Tech, the Pittsburgh, Pa., native enjoyed a seven-year career in the NFL, playing for his hometown Steelers as well as the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. Strom currently works for Manulife Financial in Atlanta.
New to the broadcast crew in 2011 is Randy Waters, co-host of "Yellow Jacket Countdown," the two-hour show that airs prior to every Georgia Tech football game. Waters is the popular sports reporter/anchor for WXIA/11 in Atlanta and also serves as color analyst on the Jackets Men's Basketball radio broadcasts.
He will be joined on "Yellow Jacket Countdown" by former Jacket Nick Ferguson, back for his second year on the Yellow Jacket Broadcast Crew. Rounding out the "Countdown" crew is color analyst Rick Strom.
The football broadcast team also includes veteran engineer and producer Miller Pope along with long-time spotters Al Ciraldo, Jr., and Tommy Barber.
Back at the IMG College football studios in Winston-Salem, NC, the Georgia Tech Radio Network is anchored by studio host Alex Vispoli, who is back for his second year on the Yellow Jacket broadcast crew. Vispoli is also the host of the Jackets basketball network broadcasts.
Each broadcast begins two hours prior to kickoff with "Yellow Jacket Countdown," featuring game previews, live guests and former players.
Following each game, Wes Durham will interview key players and coaches, and fans will get statistics and scores on "The Locker Room Show."
