THE FLATS – Georgia Tech got wins from junior Andrew Kosic and freshman Ben Southern and a solid effort from junior Kate Woolbright, but nationally-ranked Louisville picked up wins over the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at the GT Aquatic Center.

The eighth-ranked Cardinals men downed the Jackets, 191.5-70.5, with their 13th-ranked women’s team picked up a 202-60 victory. Diving was not contested on Saturday.

“We swam well today, but that’s a very good program in Louisville. There’s a reason they’re in the top 10,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “It really hurts that Nico (van Duijn) will be out for a few weeks with an injury and we’ll miss his leadership, but it presents an opportunity for others to step up. Overall I think our top swimmers are performing very well. We just need to see the depth that’s going to help make us more successful as we head into the championship season.”

Kosic tied for the victory in the 50 free with Louisville’s Joao DeLucca and finished second to DeLucca in the 100 free. Kosic and DeLucca touched simultaneously in the 50 in a time of 20.41, and Kosic posted a 44.80 in the 100.

Southern was impressive for the Jackets as he and junior Mark Sarman finished first and third, respectively, in the 200 fly. Southern was clocked at 1:50.18 in winning the event, followed by Sarman in third (1:51.74). Sarman was second in the 100 fly (50.24), ahead of Southern in fourth (51.23).

Sophomore Yuval Safra picked up a second-place finish in the 1,000 free by putting down a time of 9:26.83, while teammate junior Elliott Brockelbank was second in the 500 free (4:36.22). Louisville’s Bryan Draganosky won both distance free events.

In the meet’s final event, the Jackets finished second in the 200 free relay but senior Ryan Salmon nearly chased down Louisville’s Trevor Carrol in the final leg of a thrilling finish. The relay of Salmon, Kosic, Taylor Wilson and Robert Borowicz clocked in 1:22.80.

Tech’s top finisher on the women’s side was junior Kate Woolbright, who posted a second-place finish in the 1,000 free in a time of 10:18.67. The junior distance specialist swam to a third-place finish in the 500 free with her time of 5:04.12.

The 200 free relay closed it out strong for the women as sophomore Erika Staskevicius, senior Hailey White, freshman Xanna Tracy and freshman Elise Breaux finished second in a time of 1:38.62.

The Yellow Jackets have two meet remaining in the regular season and next head to Emory on January 18. That meet begins at 11 a.m.
