Nissan #ProJackets Basketball Report

Will Iman Shumpert and the Cavaliers celebrate another NBA title?
May 11, 2017

By Wiley Ballard -

Iman Shumpert and the Cleveland Cavaliers are patiently awaiting their next opponent in the Eastern Conference finals … Derrick Favors and the Utah Jazz were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals … Luke Schenscher returns to his early basketball roots in Australia … All of that and more can be found in this week’s Nissan #ProJackets Basketball Report.

Derrick Favors and the Utah Jazz were no match for the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals. All four of Utah’s losses were by double digits while Favors added a total of 13 points across the series (including two while “eating Draymond Green’s soul”). Nagging injuries marred the 25-year-old’s seventh professional season, forcing him to miss 32 games while starting just 39. The forward averaged 9.5 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 48.7 percent. Favors has one year remaining on his contract in Utah before becoming an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2018.

Marcus Georges-Hunt concluded the 2016-17 season having played 50 games, including five in the NBA. With the Orlando Magic, Georges-Hunt averaged 2.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists in just less than 10 minutes. Orlando Magic Daily described the rookie as a player “who can do a little bit of everything.” Georges-Hunt signed a multi-year, non-guaranteed deal last month.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Iman Shumpert have cruised through the postseason’s first two rounds. Sweeping Indiana and Toronto, the defending champs have hardly been tested. Across those eight games, Shumpert has logged at least 10 minutes in all but one. The guard continues to receive praise for his quick strips which have coined the term “Shumped.” Throughout the first two series Shumpert has taken on the task of guarding the opponents’ top scorers such as Paul George and DeMar Derozan. Head coach Tyronn Lue challenged Shumpert after not deploying the 26-year-old in Cleveland’s first postseason game. Shumpert credits teammate Dahntay Jones with keeping him focused after falling out of the rotation in the second half. Now that Shumpert is back playing meaningful minutes, he says he’s only concerned with “How do we win the next game? How do we advance?” Cleveland’s next game will be either Monday or Wednesday depending on whether the Wizards and Celtics play six or seven games. Washington hosts Boston in Game 6 Friday night at 8p.m. ET.

Luke Schenscher returned to his hometown team the Southern Tigers of Australia’s junior league. Twenty years earlier Schenscher began his career with Southern before heading to Georgia Tech. Much has changed since then for Schenscher who’s now 34 years old and has no cartilage in his left knee or hip.
