Jackets hoping to 'zone out' Utah defensive tackle

Lamar Owens, who played for Paul Johnson at the U.S. Naval Academy, enters his fourth year at Georgia Tech and his second as coach of the A-backs.

In 2010, Owens' group of young A-backs combined for 11 touchdowns -- nine via rushing and two by receiving. As a team, Georgia Tech led the nation in rushing offense.

Among Owens' first group of A-backs were Roddy Jones, who has rushed for more than 1,000 career yards; Orwin Smith, who emerged as a big-play threat in 2010 while averaging 9.7 yards per carry; as well as Embry Peeples, B.J. Bostic and Marcus Wright.

Prior to being named a full-time assistant coach, Owens spent the previous two seasons (2008 and 2009) as a staff assistant. He served in the role of Offensive Quality Control Coach in 2008 and he held the position of Offensive Graduate Assistant the following year. In each of Owens' first two seasons on the Flats, the Yellow Jackets led the ACC in total offense while ranking in the top five nationally in rushing offense.

In 2009, Owens worked with Brian Bohannon and the Yellow Jacket quarterbacks, including Joshua Nesbitt, Jaybo Shaw and Tevin Washington. The 2009 season saw Nesbitt rush for 1037 yards and 18 touchdowns. Nesbitt also accumulated 1701 yards through the air with 10 touchdowns while leading the Yellow Jackets to an ACC Championship Game and a BCS bowl game. Capping of a record setting year, Nesbitt was honored as the 2009 ACC first team quarterback.

As a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech, Owens was responsible for the breakdown of opponent game film, compiling scouting reports and preparing game plans. He also coordinated defensive and special teams scout teams and had an active role in on-campus recruiting visits.

A native of Savannah, Ga., Owens graduated from Benedictine Military School in 2002 before moving on to the Naval Academy. After completing his football career, Owens enrolled in the University of Maryland in the fall of 2007 and graduated in May of 2008.

In 2005, Owens directed a Navy offense that averaged 34.2 points and a nation's best 319.3 yards per game on the ground as the Midshipmen went 8-4, won the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy and won a bowl game in consecutive years (beat Colorado State, 51-30) for the first time in school history. Owens was named All-East as he rushed for 880 yards and threw for 1,229 yards, breaking four school records for total offense and passing yards per attempt and completion.

Owens is married to the former Lindsey Vincent.
