Jackets Conclude Day One of MLK Invitational

Jan. 14, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis grabs eight wins on the first day of the MLK Invitational on Saturday. The round robin tournament continues tomorrow, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. when the Jackets face Illinois at Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

Singles Update: The Yellow Jackets tallied eight wins in singles on the day. Sophomore Andrew Li grabbed the first win for Tech after his opponent retired in the second set. Cole Fiegel topped Columbia’s Timothy Wang, 6-3, 6-3. No. 9 Christopher Eubanks won a nail-biter over Columbia’s No. 40 Victor Pham, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Freshman Carlos Divar started his Tech career on a good note, winning a close match over Richard Pham, 7-6, 7-6. Daniel Yun came back from a first set loss to top William Matheson, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Elijah Melendez dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 decision on Adam Ambrozy.

Doubles Update: The Jackets split in doubles matches on the day. Fiegel and Li teamed up on court four to grab the first win for Tech with a 6-3 decision over Columbia’s Matheson and Rolski. The pair advanced their record from the fall season to 4-0. Chris and Daniel Yun took their match to the wire, forcing a tiebreaker with the Lions’ Grant and Ambrosky before winning, 7-6 (6).

Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “Across the board, I told the guys, that we came out and played the way we need to play in singles. Everybody I felt like was in their matches. That’s what you want to get out of this tournament, some close matches, put the guys under pressure and I think we responded pretty well. Columbia is a good team; they’re a top-25 team so it was a good result.”
