No. 1 Virginia Holds Off Tech, 6-1

March 22, 2009

Freshman Dusan Miljevic picked up a win at No. 6 singles, but the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (6-8, 1-4 ACC) fell 6-1 to No. 1 Virginia (20-0, 5-0 ACC) Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.

“Credit goes to Virginia for playing a very good match,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “We played well in doubles and made every match competitive, but they came out in four of six singles matches and beat us up.”

The top-ranked Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead early after sweeping all three positions in doubles play. The No. 4 duo of Barrick and Singh defeated Tech’s Guillermo Gomez and Ryan Smith, 8-6, at the No. 1 position before No. 13 Inglot and Shabaz triumphed over Doug Kenny and Kevin King by a score of 8-5 at the No. 2. The closest doubles match of the day came at the No. 3 spot, as Eliot Potvin and Austin Roebuck battled to a seven to seven score, but eventually fell 9-7 in the end.

UVA extended its lead to 3-0 with singles wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 spot over Potvin and Miguel Muguruza in straight-sets. No. 23 Sanam Singh defeated Potvin 6-3, 6-1 before No. 18 Michael Shabaz downed Muguruza 6-2, 6-2.

Virginia’s Drew Courtney would clinch the match for the Cavaliers soon after on court No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ryan Smith. Also having a tough match on the day was 12th-ranked Gomez, who fell to No. 15 Dominic Inglot, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot to put the Jackets down 5-0. Inglot became of first Tech opponent to defeat Gomez in straight-sets the entire dual match season.

Miljevic earned Tech’s lone victory at the No. 6 position with a 6-1, 6-2 win over UVA’s Steven Eelkman Rooda.

In the final match of the day, King almost gave Tech another point in a battle with Virginia’s Houston Barrick. King took the first set 6-3, before dropping the second 7-5. Playing the third as a 10-game super-set, Barrick came out on top with a tight 10-8 win.

“Our two freshmen played very well,” Thorne added. Dusan won and Kevin battled before losing a tiebreaker in the third.”

The Jackets return home to host No. 18 Wake Forest Friday, March 27, at 2:30 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
