THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis doubles team of sophomore Carlos Divar and senior Michael Kay earned ACC Doubles Team of the Week honors after defeating the No. 3 duo in the country on Sunday, the league announced today.
No. 24 Texas featured the third-ranked team of Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles at their No. 1 doubles spot, and Divar and Kay battled them to a 6-all standoff to start things Sunday afternoon in Austin. Once in the tiebreak, the No. 45 Yellow Jackets’ tandem continued to fight back and forth, eventually taking the match with the 7-5 tiebreak decision.
The victory over the nationally ranked foes represents the second win for Divar and Kay over a top-10 opponent after blanking Georgia’s eighth-ranked doubles team on Feb. 9 in the USTA College Matchday. The win catapulted the Jackets from unranked in the nation to 45th overall.
Divar and Kay improved to 11-4 on the year overall and 7-2 in dual matches this season. The team has won five of its last seven matchups entering back-to-back home matches where Georgia Tech will host ACC foe Miami on Friday (5:30 p.m.) and in-state rival Georgia State on Saturday (2 p.m.) at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
