Eubanks, Harrison Fall in Heartbreaker in U.S. Open

Sept. 3, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis senior Christopher Eubanks and Christian Harrison were able to push Robin Haase and Matwe Middelkoop to a dramatic three sets, but would ultimately fall to the Netherland duo 7-6 (5), 3-6, 4-6, in the 2017 U.S. Open on Sunday afternoon.

Eubanks and Harrison played Haase and Middelkoop to a dead-heat to start the match, as both teams played clean games to reach a 6-6 tie. The young duo then used their superior serve to outlast Haase and Middelkoop 7-5 in the tiebreaker to take the set.

The Netherland duo then responded in the second, getting the lone break and then serving out the rest of the set to take it 6-3.

Three unforced errors in the third and two missed break opportunities ultimately doomed Eubanks and Harrison after a relatively perfect match, as they fell 6-4.

Eubanks’ time in the Big Apple isn’t done yet as he’s still set to participate in the fourth annual American Collegiate Invitational at the U.S Open on Sept. 7-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The invitational highlights eight collegiate men and women to play in a single-elimination tournament where the winners receive a wild card into the 2018 U.S. Open, main draw or qualifying, depending on his or her ranking next summer.
