Event Was the Last of Senior's Career at Georgia Tech
June 12, 2010
EUGENE, Ore. - Georgia Tech senior Steve Marcelle finished 13th overall in the shot put on the final day of the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Saturday.
The Green Bay, Wis. native recorded a mark of 58 feet, 6.75 inches on his third and final attempt of the field series to earn the 13th place finish. Unfortunately, the mark failed to place Marcelle in the top nine overall for a spot in the finals, as he missed out on ninth by just over two feet.
With the completion of today's event, Marcelle finishes off his banner career at Georgia Tech. He'll end his career as Tech's all-time leader in the shot put during both the outdoor and indoor season, along with carrying the all-time mark in the discus.
He also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in each season of his career On The Flats and garnered All-American honors in the shot put at last year's event. Earlier this season, Marcelle captured All-American honors for the first time at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. He also won the 2009 ACC Outdoor Field Performer of the Year award and captured All-ACC honors several times throughout his career.
Marcelle was joined at the Championships by fellow senior Alphonso Jordan, who took part in the triple jump, and sophomore Bianca Stewart, who participated in the high jump. In both events, which were contested on Wednesday, Jordan finished eighth overall to pick up All-American honors, while Stewart placed 15th in her event.
