NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Georgia Tech track & field team completed the first day of competition at the Music City Challenge on Friday night, and the Jackets had a solid performance from one of their pole vaulters.

Senior Nikita Kirillov, who is coming back from a serious injury suffered last season, finished seventh with a season-best vault of 5.18.

“I am very pleased that Nikita Kirillov continues to make progress,” head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale said. “He vaulted another season best tonight and looked good doing it. Tomorrow will be a big and important day for us.”

On the women’s side, Bailey Weiland was able to finish sixth in the high jump with a jump of 1.67.

“It was a pretty light day at the track for us today with only three events that we competed in,” said head women’s coach Alan Drosky. “But we saw some nice performances from Jamilah (Middlebrooks) and Bria (Matthews) in the 200m and a nice improvement in the distance medley relay. Tomorrow will be very busy from the first event to the last relay.”

Middlebrooks finished 12th in a very deep field in the 200m with a time of 24.87, while Matthews finished 19th with a time of 25.24. Tech’s distance medley relay team of Haley Anderson, Lindsey Wheeler, Samantha Kiblinger and Melissa Fairey finished third in the event with a time of 11:51.40.

Competition at the Music City Challenge will continue at 10 a.m. Saturday with the 3000m races.
