Harmon, Lynch Earn ITA Region Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. —Georgia Tech women’s tennis head coach Rodney Harmon and assistant coach Christy Lynch both received ITA Southeast Region honors as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Monday. The national award winners will be released on May 23.

Harmon, in his fifth season at the helm of the Yellow Jacket women’s tennis program, has been named the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year after guiding the Jackets to the ACC Championship title match, 18th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and ninth NCAA round of 16 berth. The Jackets head into Athens with a 27-4 overall record, the best mark since 2007, and have been nationally-ranked every week this season, earning the highest ranking in school history in 10 years earlier this season.

Prior to the ACC Championships, Harmon was selected as the ACC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. He guided the Jackets to a 13-1 ACC ledger, the best league mark in school history, and earned a share of the regular season title.

Lynch was named the ITA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. A member of the Georgia Tech 2007 National Championship team, Lynch is in her third season with the Yellow Jacket program. She has helped guide Tech to NCAA postseason appearances in every year. During her tenure, the Jackets have made two ACC Championship title matches and the NCAA round of 16 twice.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by our peers,” noted Harmon. “Christy has done an amazing job working with our team. She is one of the best coaches in the country. It is a tremendous honor to represent Georgia Tech and our program.”

Harmon is the second coach in program history to earn ITA Region Coach of the Year honors as Bryan Shelton earned the recognition in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Lynch is also the second coach in program history to pick up ITA Assistant Coach of the Year — Nannie de Villiers received the award in 2005.

Georgia Tech returns to the courts in Athens, Ga., for the round of 16 and will face Oklahoma State on Friday at 7 p.m.
