Four First-Place Finishes Lead Tech at BSC Icebreaker

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Georgia Tech indoor track and field opened the 2017-18 season strong in Alabama at the BSC Icebreaker on Friday with three first-place finishes and seven in the top five.

As a team, the women finished fifth overall in the meet with 60 points and the men finished 13th overall with 11 points despite not competing a full bevy of participants.

Having an impressive day in the women’s 60M dash, Pharist O’Neal took first place with a 7.59 time in the finals after a second-place prelim time of 7.63. Anika Carter finished 15th overall (7.90) overall.

Raven Stewart then fought hard to a first-place 8.43 time in the women’s 60M hurdles finals that set a new BCS Icebreaker meet record after turning in a first-place 8.58 time in prelims. Marinice Bauman also finished in the top-15 in prelims with a 14th-place 9.07 time.

In a thriller, Madeline Hammond edged out a first-place victory in the women’s high jump, finishing with a distance of 1.61 meters. Bauman had a top-10 finish as well, finishing with a 1.50-meter distance. Bria Matthews would be the next Yellow Jacket to take first-place honors, winning the women’s long jump with a 5.70-meter finish, before Brianna Hayden earned a top-five finish in the 200-meter dash, turning in a 24.76 finish that was good for third.

Domonique Hall also had a fine outing, finishing with a fourth-place 56.92 time in the women’s 400-meter dash. Denise Woode and Shannon Innis finished in the top 15, finishing 11th (59.11) and 15th (1:00.03), respectively. Tech also had two top-15 finishes in the 800-meter run as Brittany Powell (2:25.03) and Kendria Edouard (2:25.63) finished 13 th and 14th, respectively, to round out the day for the women.

For the men, Tyson Spears recorded a 6.93 sixth-place finals time in the 60M dash after a 7th-place 6.95 prelim finish. In the 800M run, John Lyons finished second with a 1:55.37 time before Tyler Whorton finished fifth with a 1:57.33 time.

Georgia Tech indoor track and field returns in 2018 when it heads to the Orange and Purple Classic at Clemson on Jan. 6.
